The Supreme Court of the State of New York certified on April 8, 1999, a national class action against American Bankers Insurance Group, Inc., American Bankers Insurance Company of Florida, and Bankers American Life Assurance Company.
The suit charges that these three companies’ advertising materials and solicitations are deceptive. Their bold typeface promises coverage if the insured cardholder dies, becomes disabled or becomes unemployed, but the fine print restricts the availability of that coverage. When the claim for insurance is made, the claim is denied for a variety of reasons, including:
--the state of the customer’s residence
--the age of the customer
--whether or not the customer is self-employedThe attorneys representing the plaintiffs in this case, who purchased credit card insurance but whose claims were denied due to restrictions in fine print, are with the firm of Wolf Popper.
