MasterCard's Homerun (6/24/99)
FULL STORY:
How would you like to sit with a living baseball legend at a World Series
game? Is that priceless? Or what? Major League
Baseball and MasterCard International announced this week a joint
promotional program that celebrates the legendary baseball players of the
past 100 years by giving fans the opportunity to select Major League
Baseball's All-Century Team.
The names of the Century's best players, selected by a special panel of
media members, baseball executives, and baseball historians, will be
announced at the All-Star Game in Boston on July 13 and placed on a ballot
for fan voting, that will begin July 13 and last through September 10. Fans
will be asked to vote for two players at each infield position, two
catchers, six pitchers, and nine outfielders for a total of 25 players.
The ballots will be available at participating Major League Baseball
stadiums, in special MasterCard advertising inserts in Sports Illustrated
and TV Guide, online through Major League Baseball's web site
(www.majorleaguebaseball.com), and at participating Kmart stores.
The ballots will be tabulated in September to determine Major League
Baseball's All-Century Team, which will be honored in a television special
narrated by Bob Costas, on NBC prior to Game One of the 1999 World Series.
The starting lineup, selected by the special panel, will then be announced
on NBC during the World Series.
In support of the program, MasterCard, an official sponsor of Major League
Baseball, will run a card usage sweepstakes offering lucky fans a chance to
win a "Priceless Moment" at the 1999 World Series. From July 13 -- September
10, consumers who use their MasterCard card will be automatically entered
into the "MasterCard All-Century Team Sweepstakes." Five winners will be
randomly selected to win an all expenses paid trip for four to the 1999
World Series to sit with select living members of the All-Century Team at a
World Series Game. (No purchase necessary. Void where prohibited.)
