American Express rolled out a new consumer brochure yesterday to provide
consumers with information and tips concerning online privacy and security.
'CyberSmarts: Tips for Protecting Yourself When Shopping Online' was
developed by AmEx in conjunction with The FTC, The Consumer Information
Center, The DMA and Call For Action. The brochure is available via AmEx's Web site
and by mail.
American Express Company introduced a new consumer brochure, "CyberSmarts: Tips for Protecting Yourself When Shopping Online." The brochure was developed by American Express in conjunction with The Federal Trade Commission, The Consumer Information Center, The Direct Marketing Association and Call For Action.
"The Internet is an exciting tool, providing consumers with vast information, convenience and choice," said Peggy Haney, Vice President of Consumer Affairs at American Express. "As with many methods of purchasing, however, there are concerns about privacy and security protection. 'CyberSmarts' provides consumers with the tips they need to know to help protect their personal information online and make their online shopping experience safe."
"CyberSmarts" is available on American Express' Web site at http://www.americanexpress.com/corp/consumerinfo/cybershop.shtml. The brochure addresses such topics as how to secure purchase information sent over the Internet; how to safeguard personal information online; and the questions consumers should ask about a company's online privacy and security practices.
The brochure also discusses cybershoppers' rights when buying online. For example, consumers may be unaware that the same Fair Credit Billing Act that protects their phone, mail and in-person orders applies in cyberspace, too. Under this law, consumers are generally held liable only for the first $50 in charges in the case of unauthorized use of a consumer's credit or charge card. The federal Mail or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule also covers orders made via the Internet. This means that unless stated otherwise, merchandise must be delivered within 30 days, and if there are delays, the company must notify the consumer.
Copies of "CyberSmarts: Tips for Protecting Yourself When Shopping Online" are available from: American Express Company, P.O. Box 4635, Trenton, NJ 08650-9874.
