Pan American World Airways, which recently began flights between JFK and LAX and JFK and Miami, rolled out its WorldPass frequent flyer program yesterday. The program permits mileage pooling, significant mileage bonus for all classes of service and lower redemption levels. Pan Am said a co-branded card program will be announced early next year.

Pan American World Airways, which began full-service flights between New York's JFK and both Miami and Los Angeles on Sept. 26, announces its travel reward program, "WorldPass," that lets customers earn free flights faster than any other loyalty program in the airline industry.

"We designed `WordPass' to let our customers earn free travel quickly, and as easily as possible," said Rick Blake, the carrier's senior vice president of marketing. "Pan Am's program works very well for people who fly only a few times a year and superbly for those who fly more frequently," he added.

Unique Features

"WorldPass" offers members a number of benefits they cannot receive from any other air carriers, including:

• Mileage Pooling: the ability for up to three members to pool their miles to pay for a free travel reward. No other airline allows mileage pooling.

• More Generous Flight Mileage Bonuses: members flying in economy earn a 125 percent standard mileage bonus, or five miles for every four they fly; first class customers earn a 175 percent bonus, or seven miles for every four they fly. No other airline awards more than one mile per mile flown for travel in coach class, and first class bonuses are only 50 percent.

• Lower Elite Level: customers reach the Silver Elite "WorldPass" level with only 15,000 Pan Am flight miles, and then begin earning a 33 percent bonus on all actual flight miles. Other airlines typically require 25,000 miles for elite level and pay only a 25 percent bonus. "WorldPass" Silver members earn elite level bonus miles in addition to Flight Mileage Bonuses.

• Lower Reward Levels: "WorldPass" members earn free roundtrip domestic economy tickets for only 20,000 miles, and first class tickets for just 35,000 miles. Other airlines typically require 25,000 and 40,000 miles, respectively.

"WorldPass" members earn mileage credits more quickly on Pan Am than on other airlines and can redeem them for free tickets at lower levels.

A family of three people traveling roundtrip on vacation between New York and Los Angeles, 2,459 air miles each way, will earn a total of 21,442 miles on Pan Am, including a 1,000 mile enrollment bonus for each member -- 107 percent of what they need for a free ticket at the 20,000 mile "WorldPass" requirement if they pay for it with their pooled mileage credits -- versus only 14,754 miles on another airline.

And since all other airlines prohibit mileage pooling, each of the three family members would have less than 20 percent of the 25,000 miles needed for another carrier's free ticket if they did not fly Pan Am.

This same mileage feature allows businesses to quickly earn free tickets they can use to offset travel expenses or lets people running home-based businesses combine mileage earned on their business travel with their family members flying on pleasure trips to get free tickets for subsequent business use.

Business travelers flying first class on Pan Am for less than the price of other airlines' full coach fares earn many more miles in "WorldPass" than in other carrier programs. For example, a member who takes two transcontinental roundtrips and four trips between Miami and New York on Pan Am earns a total of 34,680 miles, including the 1,000 mile enrollment bonus -- enough for one-and-three quarters ticket -- compared to the single free ticket earned on most other carriers.

Flying Pan Am, that customer also reaches the elite Silver "WorldPass" level, earning a 33 percent bonus on all flight miles in excess of 15,000 for the balance of the year the level was achieved and for the entire year following. All 1996 mileage earned will be combined with 1997 mileage for elite-level qualification. On other airlines, those same trips would take the customer only two-thirds of the way to the lowest elite level, typically paying only a 25 percent bonus.

-- Partners: "WorldPass" plans a complete partner roster of airlines, rental car, hotel, credit card and long distance telephone providers by year end. Diners Club card members already can earn and redeem in "WorldPass."

-- Mileage Validity: "WorldPass" mileage credits are valid for 36 months from the year in which they are earned.

-- Enrollment Bonus: 1,000 miles awarded in conjunction with first flight.

-- Award Issuance to Others: awards may be issued in anyone's name.

-- Automated Tracking & Reporting: "WorldPass" is an automated program that keeps track of member mileage and periodically reports it.

-- Newsletters: quarterly updates on "WorldPass" partners, promotions and other information will be published.
